ABSTRACT

Naming Ourselves, Re-claiming Our Layered Identities, and Navigating the Road to Multi-Cultural Awareness: The Timpuyog as Us
Rod Antalan, Rachelle Aurellano, James Funtanilla, Janelle Funtanilla, James Ramos, and Jeremy Sabugo

This panel presentation offers the students’ perspective on the dynamic of heritage language learning and education. It is aimed to draw upon what the heritage language learners think of their heritage language, the issues involved in their self-questioning of their own multi-faceted experiences as Filipino Americans, their attempt to come to terms with their multi-layered identities, and their honest appraisal of their effort to traverse the road to an appreciation and promotion and taking pride in their heritage language, culture, and point-of-view. Linked up with these ceaseless to-and-fro of question-and-answer is their evaluation of what their organization, Timpuyog, has done through the years in making them see clearly what has been done, what is being done, and what is yet to be done to equip them with the cultural, linguistic, and epistemic skills to a fuller understanding of what they are as second-third generation Filipino Americans.
