Political, feminist, ethnic—these are artistic labels placed on dramatic works that can simultaneously be liberating, educational, divisive and healing. One such dramatic work is the cultural adaptation of Eve Ensler's award-winning play, The Vagina Monologues. A bold group of twenty-five Filipinas adapted the play for a Filipino audience, with elements of an Ilokano perspective. Taking on the theme, "Speaking the Unspeakable So Others May Live," the controversial play also incorporated a Hawai`i Filipina sensitivity to issues of domestic violence and breast and cervical cancer awareness. This panel will examine how various political, feminist and ethnic factors played to sold out Hawai`i audiences. Panel members will provide a producer's perspective, a theatre writer's framework, and an actor's interpretation of Ilokano segments of the play.
