This presentation follows three comedians in a Makati nightclub and explores how comedy, hospitality and culture are locally reinforced and determined. As an expressive form, stand-up comedy offers an uncanny locus for a discussion of identity, power and politics. Instead of a form of communication where meanings are guaranteed, transparent or explicit, comedy affords careful listeners and others opportunities to tease out oblique critiques and perspectives. This discussion takes up the stage and televised work of U.S.- and Philippine-born comics and the hecklers who refuse and remake their performances every night. |
