ABSTRACT

THE EVOLVING LIFE-STYLE OF THE ILOCANO FAMILIES WHO RECEIVE SUPPORT FROM ABROAD:  A CASE STUDY
Filemon L. Lagon,  Union College

This study is undertaken to identify and describe the evolving life-style of families in the Philippines that receive support from their relatives abroad. Accordingly, the study is premised on three assumptions, namely: first, that while families who receive support from abroad are no different from the general cultural orientations of the Ilokano families, the financial support they receive from abroad over and above what they earn locally, are related to some of the changes in their life-style; second, that these changes also bring about some new needs, new values and aspirations, and different opportunities, far different from those families who do not get such support from elsewhere. These marked differences in terms of material and financial support eventually bring about marked differences in life-styles. Using ethnographic tools and critical ethnographic theoretical and methodological frames, these families of Barrio Cadaratan will be compared with those who do not receive support from abroad and their changed and changing life-styles assessed against the backdrop of the general family demographics of the place.
