The research aims to develop instructional materials and implement a unit plan using Iloko as medium of instruction and note and analyze the results as well as to gather a procedural experience in the teaching of science in the vernacular. Moreover, it has the objective to test the transferability of science concepts learned in the vernacular to English. The materials developed touched on the Unit MATTER composed of 6 lessons and it was implemented on the First year students of Catagtaguen National High School for the first grading period. An initial, pioneering and quasi-experimental research, it followed the one shot deal experimental design and was not designed for comparable purposes because of problems in homogeneity of the experimental subject classes. The students however were evaluated making use of both Iloko and English as the medium of evaluation and the test results confirmed the high degree of transferability of concepts learned in Iloko to English. A subjective reflection of some students also lent support to the long-held contention that the students would learn more because of the use of a familiar medium- their home language. In addition, some difficulties, prospects and future research path regarding the use of Iloko as a language of science were revealed by the research.
