ABSTRACT

Filipino Immigrants as Business People: Some Reflections on our Experiences in the Financing and Housing Sector
Dr. Estrella Pada Taong

The presentation is my way of giving witness to the vast possibilities open to the Filipino immigrant who is interested of pursuing a career in business. I look at this prospect open to the Filipino immigrant from the lens of my experience as an educator, and eventually, educational administrator in the Philippines before I decided to pursue a different life in Hawai`i, that of being involved in housing, mortgage, and financing. While the elements of management and administrative work are the same, they are also quite different, with the challenges of business far more than the challenges of running schools and supervising school administrators in the Philippines. One key question I have often asked is this: “Is there a place for the Filipino immigrant in the business sector?” Conversely, I have also often asked: “Can the immigrant ever make it?”
