Hawai`i was stunned in the month of July when reports of women suffering violent deaths in unrelated incidents flooded the news. The community was shocked to learn that five of the women killed were confirmed victims of domestic violence. One of the five women was Pilipina immigrant. Domestic violence has claimed the lives of too many and can no longer be ignored. This panel of experts will provide insight into Pilipino attitudes and customs that perpetuate the lethality of domestic violence in our community and discourage victims. They will discuss the barriers that battered Pilipina immigrants experience, especially in seeking help, as well as remedies that have been created to protect battered immigrant women. Panelists will also present the efforts of the Pilipina Rural Project in creating community ownership over violence against women issues, and ensuring cultural and linguistic accessibility to services accessed by Pilipina victims and survivors of abuse. The panelist will also offer tools to understand domestic violence so as a community member, service provider, friend, sister, or brother, you can assist in promoting a violence free community, and ensure safety and life for our people for the next 100 years and beyond. |
