ABSTRACT

Toward a Hawaiian-Filipino Alliance for the Struggle for Hawaiian Sovereignty
John Verzon
Honolulu, Hawaii

A major concern is why Filipinos should support the Hawaiians struggle for sovereignty. Another question is, will leaders of the various Hawaiian sovereignty movement realize the potential for winning over a large segment of Hawaii's population--such as the Filipino community--to be an important ally in its struggle?  In the next 10-20 years, Hawaiians and Filipinos will be the two largest ethnic groups in Hawaii. I believe that a Hawaiian-Filipino alliance will tip the balance of power in Hawaii. The trick is getting the leaders of both communities to realize the possibility.  Filipinos, like every one else in Hawaii, will have to take a stand collectively or as individuals as members of a Hawaiian society.
