WORKSHOP

Ilocano Language Methodologies Workshop
Dr. Rogelia Pe-Pua
School of Social Science and Policy, University of New South Wales
Sydney, AUSTRALIA

This workshop falls within one of the conference themes, Trends and Methodologies and Critical Perspectives in Ilokano Studies.

The indigenous research approach emerged in Filipino psychology to address a need to understand Filipino thought and behaviour from the insider’s perspective. In the last 20 years, several indigenous research methods were discovered and developed that have become applicable not just to psychology but to Filipino research in general. Central to the indigenous approach is the use of the indigenous language, and the appreciation of both the insider and outsider perspectives.

The centrality of the Ilocano language and the potential application of the indigenous approach to Ilocano studies will be explored in this workshop. At the end of the workshop, the participants should be able to:

  • Understand the basic principles involved in the indigenous research approach,
  • Appreciate the central role of the Ilocano language in Ilocano research,
  • Differentiate among a number of indigenous research methods, and trial a few of these methods.

The workshop activities will include: mini-lectures, small group discussions and practical exercises. There will be an opportunity to hear about the workshop facilitator’s own research on Hawayanos, Ilocano-Filipinos who lived in Hawaii and later returned to the Philippines to retire. Specifically, she will talk about how language and research are intricately intertwined.

Workshop Facilitator: Dr. Rogelia Pe-Pua

Dr. Rogelia Pe-Pua was a key player in the development of Sikolohiyang Pilipino, a movement that espouses an indigenous approach to studying Filipino psychology. She continues to be active in applying the indigenous approach in a cross-cultural context in her research on migration and settlement issues. Her contribution to Ilocano studies has been through her PhD research into the return migration of Ilocano-Filipinos from Hawaii to the Philippines.

Dr. Pe-Pua used to be an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of the Philippines. She has migrated to Australia and currently holds the position of Head of the School of Social Science and Policy at the University of New South Wales in Sydney.
